Turning off the Noordhollandskanaal into Alkmaarder Meer, one gets suddenly into a very beautiful seascape. Further south, on the Zaan, strongly populated areas change with stretches on the river giving the impression of a lake. At Zaandam then civilisation is definitely back. Industry, ports and high-risers announce the outlying districts of Amsterdam.
