Description to the Canal du Nivernais, Burgundy / Nièvre
In 1784 work started on this canal which leads from the Loire, at Decize, to Auxonne at the Yonne. At first it was not meant to connect the two rivers, it was built for timber rafting from the region of Châtillon en Bazois to Paris. Transportation of goods started in 1843 but since the locks are rather small this has stopped long ago and now this lovely canal at the foot of the Morvan is reserved to tourism.
Information to tourism & canal holiday
This is a very idyllic part of Burgundy. You’ll meet thousands of the famous Charollais cattle’s. The locks and lifting bridges have to be handled by your-self. There are a few more villages in the northerly part from Auxerre to the tunnels of Breuilles, Moues and Collancelle. The southerly part offers beautiful landscapes all over.

Kitchen and cellar
For gourmands the first third of the north is the most interesting part. After Bay the not very exciting rural
food of Burgundy is served. However, if you find “Oeufs en Meurette” on the menu, they are worth trying. As far as vine is concerned the nearby Loire has a good influence.
