The canal from Roanne to Digoin
It is a short excursion from Digoin at the Canal du Centre to Roanne at the Haute Loire. Roanne was once the centre of the French textile industry. Some years ago the former industrial port became one of the most beautiful inland ports. You find here any possible facilities. Worth a stop is also the small village of Briennon with its navigation museum. At the peak of inland waterways activities a connection through the mountains to Lyon was planned but railway extensions were faster.

Advantages: A very quiet canal, far away of any bustle and on its end a town that really offers a lot.
Disadvantage: One has to go back the same way.

A journey full of contrast, on your way you are in isolated, rural countryside and at its end you meet a bigger town which offers not only a beautiful port but every other comfort you might look for. 

Food and Drinks
Modern transport brought Roanne closer to Lyon and to the wine of the Rhone valley but the light wine of this region should not be neglected. Meals are country-like, being in the neighbourhood of Auvergne, more lamb is on the menus. Allow yourself something very special and take the Maison “Troisgros***” into consideration!
