Canal de la Sambre à l'Oise

Suitability for houseboats: **

Canal de la Sambre à l'Oise & Sambre
It is part of the connection Oise – Sambre – Maas (Belgium). Once an important waterway, the Belgian coal was transported this way to Paris. The very special surroundings, as well as the rest of Picardie and Nord Pas de Calais, are worth to be discovered. It doesn’t always have to be the Burgundy.

Information to the Canal de la Sambre à l'Oise
this connection from the Oise and the Canal St. Quentin in France to the Sambre in the south of Belgium was opened in 1838. For leisure boaters, this is probably the most comfortable way from Paris to the southeast of Belgium with Maas (Meuse) and Julianakanaal. The canal remained in the “Freycinet-Gabarit”, therefore, it only takes small commercial vessels. Big vessels use for this stretch the connection Canal du Nord – Deule – Schelde. For this reason, there is hardly any traffic on the Sambre à l’Oise.

Boating in Picardie and Nord Pas de Calais
There are no house boat hirers in this area.
Length: 124 km, locks: 47!

Tourism
There is not much of it around here. The landscape is not very spectacular and there are, as in the rest of Pas de Calais and Picardie, military cemeteries everywhere, being evidence of the many wars that have taken place in this badly oppressed region
