Description to the Sarthe
It has its spring in the hills, north of Le Mans. Until Alençon, it is rather wild but becomes afterwards much quieter. In Le Mans it meets the Huine and together, they become navigable. The Sarthe flows then in wide twists, bordered by trees and willows, towards Angers, where it joins the Maine and the Mayenne and flows a few kilometres further into the Loire.

River Sarthe is an apparentness to friends of northern France and the Loire area.

Tourism
Le Mans is the first town on the navigable river. If there are no races, the old town is quiet and always worth a visit. Downstream, at km 17, the medieval mill of Fillé, newly restored, can be looked at. At Suze, the Château de Bellefille invites you and in Parcé, there is another, fortified, medieval mill. Sablès sur Sarthe has an excellent port and invites therefore for a rest. PK 82, Pincé: Golfers and lovers of fine food shouldn’t miss this place. Afterwards come Châteauneuf, Ecouflant and Briollay, all with more or less nice ports, and then, one is already on the Maine and therefore at Angers.

Vine and Dine
A hopeless case, which doesn’t fall in love to the dishes of Normandy: Langoustine, Coguilles St. Jacques, Brochettes de Fruits de Mer, Artichauts à la Vinaigrette, Tripes, Brochettes de Crevettes and of course Crêpes, crêpes, cr…. All accompanied with a fine cider or beer. Perhaps a Galette Breton at the end? And with the „petit noir“ then an exquisite Calvados of the region!
