La Seine, de Marcilly à Paris
Suitability for a houseboat holiday ***
For the entire world,
also French people, this is the river of Paris and for Paris, the one crossing Paris. But, also rivers belonging to capitals have a normal spring somewhere. The Seine has a very noble place of birth, the charming hills of the northerly Côte d’Or, some kilometres away of Dijon and the most famous wine-yards of the world. It gets a companion at the beautiful town of Troyes,
the Canal de la Haute Seine. It used to go from Nogent to Troyes, now it is navigable until Marcilly sur Seine.
Information for the Skipper:
Advantages: The Petite Seine offers together with the Yonne and the Canal du Loing a nice district for a boat holiday away of very busy routes.
Disadvantage: Villages along the Petite Seine are mostly rural or industrial oriented places.
Length (to Paris): 169 kms; locks: 19; boat hirers: At the Yonne and the Canal de Bourgogne.
Together with the Yonne, the Petite Seine can be recommended for family holidays, but you have to be aware that the locks have Cargo ship dimensions. Attention: Navigation on the Seine outside of Paris is only allowed if you have an appropriate license.
Tourism
The Canal de la Haute Seine to Troyes would be the most interesting region, but at the moment it is not navigable. The Petite Seine with the nice towns of Marcilly and Noget is not developed for tourists. Towns along the Haute Seine are of no interest, perhaps because everybody seems to rush to Paris. Boatmen have two possibilities for landing, the Port de la Grenelle on the Seine, just above the Liberty Statue and the Port d’Ârsenal on the Canal St. Martin, this one is in the middle of the City next to Place de la Bastille, it is very attractive and popular, reservation is therefore absolutely necessary.
Food and Drinks
No comment for Marcilly and the way to the border of Paris and there is no need for one as far as the capital is concerned.
