In France it is still called the Lys, then it becomes the border for a few kilometres and has two names, Lys mitoyenne or Grenzleie. From Menen on it is known as the Leie. Still a major link be-tween Lille and western Belgium. In several places the curvy river has been straightened, but the sailor can still enjoy long stretches of the original beautiful landscape.

















Before flowing into the Schelde, the Leie crosses the Old Town of Gent and is there of equal importance as the Seine to Paris, the Spree to Berlin or the Danube to Vienna. Unfortunately, normal navigation is, because of the low bridges, not possible.
