The canal begins at Deinze, runs westward past Ghent and ends a bit below Eeklo. As it flows mostly through flower growing areas and doesn’t come near any large city, it belongs to the category of quiet canals. The only city in its surrounding area is Eeklo in northwest Flanders, a market town with barely 20,000 residents.
