The Cyclades
These isles of the Aegean Sea form something like a circle around the island of Delos, the antique trade centre. The best known and biggest of the 220 isles are Thíra (Santorini), Ios, Naxos, Mykonos, Amorgos, tinos and Andros. Most of them are rather scarce and mountainous. On Naxos and Andros mountains raise up to 1000 m above sea level. Since it is very dry during summer, vegetation is limited to olive trees and vine.

The beautiful beaches here shouldn't be visited in high summer, also exploring the archaeological excavations by 40° Celsius (104° Fahrenheit) isn't the real thing either. In spring and autumn though, inhabitants of the temperate zones can find what is for them an agreeable "summer".
