Canale Ticino & Naviglio Grande
People of Milan realised quite early that a real city needed a real River too. Since the Fiume Lambro brought either very small or then destructive amounts of water, one decided to tap the Ticino, which had because of its huge equalising reservoir, the Lago Maggiore, a more or less regular water level. The canal was inaugurated in 1272! and was water supply, transport way and sewer system at the same time. (Unfortunately this has not changed, since Milano offers itself the luxury to have its entire sewerage cleared by the Po and the Adriatic Sea!)  There is a serious project to reopen the canals Ticino, Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese for navigation again. This would be very interesting for tourism at the south of Switzerland. One would be able, after 200 years, to get by boat from Locarno to the Mediterranean Sea again.
Naviglio Martesana
This canal was opened in 1457 and connected the Darsena of Milan with the River Adda, which is flowing into the Po and ensured the access to the Mediterranean Sea. After the direct connection Milano - Po, the Naviglio Pavese, was opened, this canal was closed since River Adda also couldn't provide a regular water level.
