Stroudwater Navigation
Thames & Severn Canal
Cotswold Canals, Stroudwater Navigation and Thames & Severn Canal
With the start-up of this connection in 1789 an old dream came true; a direct link between the two big rivers Severn and Thames. Since 1911 the Thames & Severn Canal is not navigable throughout anymore. In 1954 also Stroudwater Navigation was closed down.
There are plans for restoration of this waterway since 1996 as it would be of great interest for tourism in the Cotswold region. The waterway crosses hilly landscapes, romantic valleys and lively waters in one of the most beautiful areas of England.
Unfortunately the responsible people have to cope with many problems and it will therefore take some time until the first Narrow boat will get from river Severn to the Thames on this way.
