The Forth & Clyde Canal
With this direct connection from the North Sea to the Atlantic, an old dream of the Scottish people became reality. In 1650 King Charles gave orders for the construction in order to avoid the troublesome circumnavigation of the Hebrides with his war vessels.
In 1784 the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal connected Falkirk with Edinburgh. This finally allowed the rivalling inhabitants of the two biggest Scottish towns to meet by boat too.
