Lake of Zurich

Lake of Zurich
 Information
It  has a length of 42 km and a maximum width of 3.85 km and depth of 143 m. Even though the lake is very heavily used, its water has still the quality of drinking water! The main tributary is the river Linth, which, since the building of the Linthkanal, passes through the Walensee first. Leaving the lake, it becomes the river Limmat.
The lake is surrounded by the cantons of Zurich, Schwyz and St. Gallen. On summer weekends the lake is almost crowded; a bit over 10% of the 107’000 matriculated boats and ships of Switzerland lay on or beside the lake of Zurich.

Tourism
It is basically concentrated on the city of Zurich, the lake itself and a few places around it. The most exiting way of experiencing the lake is of course on once one boat or, if lacking, a ship of the Schifffahrtsgesellschaft Zürich owning a big fleet of motor- and historical steamships.

Cuisine and Cellar
Towns and villages around the lake of Zurich (the gold coast from Zollikon to Herrliberg and lake communities of Schwyz) are amongst the most exclusive of Switzerland and therefore also expensive. The food served is very often a culinary highlight. Probably all the exclusive wines of the world are served here. But on each wine list one can surely find at least one of the local products too. On over 600 ha of growing area white wines are to about 1/3 Müller-Thurgau, 1/4 Räuschling and the rest is Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir is predominant for red wines. Food served is very international. Specialities, such as Züri-Geschnetzeltes with Rösti are served in many Restaurants. Along the lake you should try fish, for example the Zürichsee-Felchen. Typical meals of the region are also Kutteln im Teig or Zürcher Ratsherrentopf .
