Lake of Brienz

Description
The very steep slopes around this lake of the Bernese mountain region continue also below water level. This is the reason why the lake isn’t really suitable for bathing even though it has crystal clear water. It has a surface of just below 30 Km2 and the maximum deepness is 260 m. The main feeder is the river Aare, which is leaving the lake at Bönningen in order to serve right afterwards the lake of Thune.

Tourism
This very beautiful mountain lake is in its south, east and west flanked by high mountains and belongs to the most impressive lakes of the Alps. Whether you enjoy the breathtaking few on board of the Steamship Lötschberg, on one of the modern motor ships or climb with the steam train up the “Brienzer Rothhorn” and enjoy it all from above, you will never forget it again! Don’t miss to visit the “Giessbachfälle”. The Giessbach falls over 14 steps and 400 m down into the Lake of Brienz. And yes, it is the one where Sherlock Holmes….

Cuisine and Cellar
Everything from the cellar hasn’t its origin from the region and depends therefore on the kind of Restaurant you choose. Very well known and of high quality is the cheese produced here, you must try it! The cheese fondue is a joy, even in summer. Maisgnocchi or potatoes soup with cheese flakes or a golden “Roeschti” with bacon are a treat. Not to forget the fine fish “Felchen” from the lake or the smoked meat “Brienzer Rauchfleisch”.
Like on all the other places visited by tourists in Switzerland, you have a large variety of international cuisine too.
