Lac de Neuchâtel

Lake of Neuenburg (Neuchâtel)
It is with its surface of 218km2 the biggest lake lying entirely in Switzerland. Neighbouring the lake are the cantons of Neuenburg (Neuchâtel), Freiburg (Fribourg), Waadt (Vaud) and Berne. It is 38.3 kms long and has a maximum width of 8.2 kms. Maximum depth is of 152m. The most important towns on the lake are Yverdon les Bains and Neuenburg (Neuchâtel). Famous are the castles of Estavayer and Grandson. At Grandson the Swiss conquered “Karl den Kühnen” and put to flight the Burgundians in 1476. Today the surroundings are very peaceful and many think of the lake to be the most beautiful in Switzerland.

Tourism
The Lake of Neuchâtel – the Swiss Sea – is together with Lake of Bienne and Lake of Morat the biggest linked water sport area of Switzerland. Between Yverdon, at the westerly end of the Lake of Neuchâtel and Solothurne at the end of the navigable river Aare, are all the same 107 kilometres. Besides, the three lakes are linked with the canals Broye and Zihl. At the southerly waterside kilometres of reed fields stand in front of the mellow hills of the midlands and the powerful backdrop of the Bernese Mountains with Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The northerly side is more intensely populated and goes soon into the steep hillside of the Jura, where the well known vines of Neuenburg grow.

Cuisine and Cellar
The sunny, southerly hillsides of Jura are ideal for vine growing and there are quite a few gorgeous vineyards. A speciality is Oeil de Perdrix a Rose vine made of Pinot Noir. Besides Chasselas, Chardonay, Pinot Gris, RieslingXSylvaner and even Gewürztraminer are planted here. Of course a lot of Fish and “Saucisse au Pinot Noir” are served around the lake but the Jura of Neuenburg offers quite a few other specialities too, such as Fondue, sausage with Absinth or trip.
