Lake of Lugano
It is one of the two lakes in the southern canton of Switzerland (Tessin) which the Swiss share with Italy. The lake is because of the mild, Mediterranean climate around it very popular. Its borders are often rather steep and it has therefore not many beaches or marinas. It is 271 m above sea level and has a surface of 48.7 km2.
Tourism (Lugano Tourism)
The special charm of the two lakes of Tessin (Ticino) is that they are lakes of the Alps but have an almost Mediterranean climate. The flora growing along the lakes is accordingly. The canton of Tessin is a popular travel destination for all the Swiss living in the north of the Swiss Alps and their neighbours in the north of Europe.
Cuisine and Cellar
People living here where, until after the First World War, rather poor and therefore the main nourishment were chestnuts, polenta and potatoes. Today, the international cuisine and the one of Lombardy have their influence on dishes served. Polenta with rabbit or different kinds of Risotto (with mushrooms, tomatoes etc.) are amongst the most popular ones.
Wine growing is by almost 90% of Merlot. One can get the “Merlot del Ticino” everywhere. It is often served as a simple table wine but one can also find top wines of local production. After an excellent meal with a fine Merlot, a Grappa should go along with the “Ristretto”.
