The Swiss lakes: Lago Maggiore
Because of the very famous Swiss places along the lake, like Locarno and Ascona, one might get the idea, that it is a Swiss lake. In reality only about 20% of the lake are in Switzerland, the big rest belongs to Italy. This 80% make it second in size of the Italian lakes after the “Lago di Garda”. Well known places on the Italian side are Stresa, Arona, Luino etc. It has a surface of 212.5 km2 and a maximum depth of considerable 372 m which means that the sea ground is up to 170 m below sea level.
Tourism-Information
The lake lies in the middle of the canton of Tessin (Ticino) which is also called “sunny living room of Switzerland” and is, because of the southerly position between the foothills of the Alps, a very popular travel destination to many people of middle and northern Europe. The touristy offers are very extensive. But still, people looking for quietness and reclusion will find a lot of romantic places around the lake.
Cuisine and Cellar
People living here where, until after the First World War, rather poor and therefore the main nourishment were chestnuts, polenta and potatoes. Today, the international cuisine and the one of Lombardy have their influence on dishes served. Polenta with rabbit or different kinds of Risotto (with mushrooms, tomatoes etc.) are amongst the most popular ones.
Wine growing is by almost 90% of Merlot. One can get the “Merlot del Ticino” everywhere. It is often served as a simple table wine but one can also find top wines of local production. After an excellent meal with a fine Merlot, a Grappa should go along with the “Ristretto”.
